BEWARE OF DOG
As
a plastic surgeon, dog bites can be one some of the most challenging
reconstructive procedures I face. On average there are over 334,000
people who go to the emergency room each year in the United States for
dog bite treatment. Most victims are children with the face or neck
being injured a majority of the time. People usually believe that
rabies is still the reason children die after dog bites, but there have
only been 22 cases in the U.S. from 1990 to 1996. The dog bite itself
is really the problem. The bites can range from merely a scratch to
severe injuries, requiring multiple operations and leaving a child
permanently disfigured. There are approximately 20 children who die
each year from dog attacks. It is important to recognize that 58% of
all dog bites occur at home and many are thought to be preventable.
Here are some guidelines for dog bite prevention:
1) Never leave an infant or young child alone with any dog.
2) Teach children not to approach unfamiliar or stray dogs.
3) Never disturb a dog while its eating, sleeping, or tied up.
4)
When attempting to pet a dog, ask the owner for permission first, then
approach the dog slowly with your hand out and the palm facing
downwards. Make no sudden movements and allow the dog to check you out
first.
5) If a dog does attack, it is best to stay still or play dead to minimize further biting.
6) Seek medical treatment for all animal bites.

What To Expect: This surgery is done as an outpatient either under
a general anesthetic or a local with sedation. There are many ways to perform
this operation and your surgeon will discuss with you the best approach for your
body (for example, implant placement above or below the muscle).
Preprocedure: Will be discussed at length during your consultation.
Before and after photos can be shown at your consultation. Our doctors will
typically spend 45 minutes discussing this procedure. Consultations are FREE OF
CHARGE.
Postprocedure: In general, you will have mild to moderate pain
after the operation that will be well controlled with pain medicine. You will
also be given antibiotics for a few days. The swelling and soreness usually
subsides over 5-7 days.
BREAST LIFT
Procedure Description: restoring the position of the breast
What To Expect: Breast lift or mastopexy will bring the breast back
to a more youthful, normal position. Implants are sometimes used to increase the
volume of the breast as well.
Preprocedure: During the consutlation, your breasts will be
examined and the proper technique for you will be explained. Before and after
photos are available.
Postprocedure: Depending upon the method used, you will have some
swelling and bruising for 1-2 weeks. This will gradually subside. Most patients
are able to get back to work in 5-7 days.
BREAST REDUCTION

What To Expect: Breast reduction patients are among our happiest.
The relief of neck and shoulder pain is immediate. Generally patients have
surgery as an outpatient and only use pain medicine for a few days. Most women
are back to work in 1-2 weeks. A majority of the time, this surgery is covered
by insurance policies.
Preprocedure: During your consultation, the details of the
procedure will be discussed and you will be shown before/after photos.
Postprocedure: You will be able to shower 1-2 days after surgery
adn drive once you no longer require pain medicine. Most patients resume all
activities without restrictions in 4 weeks.
BREAST RECONSTRUCTION
Procedure Description: restoring cosmesis following mastectomy
What To Expect: Breast cancer and mastectomy can be devastating to
a woman. Reconstructive procedures have improved tremendously over the last
decade. Dr. Hueneke provides a variety of options for his patients including
skin sparing mastectomy and immediate reconstruction with TRAM flap.
Preprocedure: The consultation will take about one hour to fully
discuss your options. Since 1998, Federal law has mandated insurance companies
pay for these services.
Postprocedure: Breast reconstruction requires a huge committment
from both the surgeon and patient. At least 2-3 surgeries are necessary and the
process will take up to 6 months. The surgery, however, is extremely rewarding
and we have many women who are willing to share their experiences.
Liposuction
What To Expect: Liposuction is a great opportunity for both men and
women to look their best. It is designed for individuals who are in fairly good
shape but have "problem areas" that do not respond to diet and exercise. Dr.
Hueneke uses the tumescent technique as well as power and ultrasound assisted
liposuction.
Preprocedure: During your consultation, the details of the surgery
will be explained. Our patients have been very satisifed with their results. We
perform this procedure with the latest techniques and in approved facilites to
insure patient safety.
Postprocedure: The surgery is done on an outpatient basis. Usually
people are back to work in 3-5 days. You will need to wear a special compressive
garment for 3 weeks. There can be a moderate amount of brusing that subside by
this time.
What To Expect: Tummy tucks can provide some of the most dramatic
results in our field. The problems of skin/fat excess as well as abdominal wall
weakness are all addressed with this procedure.
Preprocedure: During your consultation, you will learn about your

Postprocedure: There are few if any side effects. Results are seen
in 2-5 days and last for 3 months.
Collagen Injections
Procedure Description: improving wrinkles and scars
What To Expect: Wrinkle, scars, and thin lips are enhanced with
this technology.
Preprocedure: A local anesthetic is applied to the area to be
treated
Postprocedure: Minimal swelling and bruising occur and the result
is immediate and lasts about 3 months.
SPIDER VEIN TREATMENT
Procedure Description:
What To Expect: Spider veins can be treated by injection or with a
laser. Depending upon the size of the blood vessel, one or both treatments may
be utilized.
Preprocedure: The laser treatments work well on the face and leg
vessels too small to inject. The procedure may last from a few minutes to a half
an hour.
Postprocedure: You may need to wear a compressive (ACE) wrap for a
few days afterward for larger areas. The veins will gradually disappear over 2-3
weeks.
